A DAY OFF
Photographs from the F.C. Gundlach Collection

Stadtmuseum Schleswig

April 29 - August 14, 2022

The exhibition A DAY OFF with works from the F.C. Gundlach Collection takes an amused look at the grotesque manifestations of our leisure culture. On display are a total of 69 works by internationally important artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Peter Keetman, Lisette Model, Dirk Reinartz, F.C. Gundlach and contemporary photographers such as David Hockney, Thomas Höpker, Martin Parr and Esther Haase.

The exhibition visualizes with a wink how absurd and irrational our leisure behavior has become. Health and fitness either seem to play no role or are taken to extremes: People feast, sizzle, smoke and sweat for all they're worth. One could almost think that organized leisure time in fixed structures, as practiced in the early sports and leisure clubs, was more relaxed. Especially since our current leisure activities are unfortunately more externally determined than we are often aware of or like. Even if the exhibition A DAY OFF can be seen as a plea for sweet idleness, after Corona we will certainly all be glad to finally be able to let off steam more carefree again. And we've also learned to just take it down a notch.

The exhibition was conceived especially for the Stadtmuseum Schleswig by the curators of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, Jasmin Seck and Natalja Aljasova.
