Germany around 1980.
Photographs from a distant country
LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn
March 24 - August 14, 2022
An exhibition project of the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn in cooperation with the Deutsche Fotothek Dresden and the F.C. Gundlach Foundation Hamburg.
The time around 1980 was a phase of profound upheaval and at the same time an era of great fears for the future. A global arms race, rampant environmental destruction and mass unemployment fueled a general mood of doom, but at the same time provided an extreme surge of creativity. Punk and pop flourished wildly and influenced the artistic avant-garde. A colorful youth culture asserted itself as the motor of feminist and homosexual emancipation. Reform parties and eco-farmers were suddenly very popular.
The exhibition "Germany around 1980" approaches this eventful time by means of seven photographic positions: In addition to works by Angela Neuke and Hans-Martin Küsters, whose estates are housed by the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn, photographs by Mahmoud Dabdoub, Gerd Danigel, Barbara Klemm, Martin Langer and Ingolf Thiel are on display. Their works come from the archives of the Deutsche Fotothek Dresden and the Stiftung F.C. Gundlach Hamburg.
The seven photographers take a highly individual look at developments in Germany around 1980: as freelance actors, as reportage photographers commissioned by newspapers and magazines, or as photo artists. They show the multifaceted image of an era that seems to have receded far from our present and yet still has many repercussions today.
