Triennial Expanded: Destruction of the Laboratory in Favor of the Experiment

As part of the Triennial of Photography 2022 with the theme Currency, ten Hamburg-based photographers use their series of works to pose the question of which images will be relevant for the future.
There is an unimaginable abundance of images in everyday life and social media, and at the same time we are experiencing the inflationary decay of our values. Are there still binding image media for approaching the truth? And what do the many photographers do when they hardly get any interest from the image databases? The title of the exhibition Destruction of the Laboratory in Favor of the Experiment provocatively, boldly and cheekily puts the old framework conditions and forms of reception to the test. It is about experimenting playfully again, breaking into the unknown, leaving the space of our imaginations through the back door and designing an image world from the future that seems sustainable and meaningful to us today.

The exhibited works deal with the fragility of the given situation and thematise the courage to approach the constructedness of reality artistically. Ten series of works are presented by: Peter Bialobrzeski, Klaus Elle, Florian Geiss, Jörg Gläscher, Andreas Herzau, Pepa Hristova, Julia Knop, Henrik Spohler, Ruth Stoltenberg and Alexandra Weber. Curated by Sebastian Lux.

With Triennial Expanded, a platform for the local Hamburg photography scene is created within the framework of the 8th Triennial of Photography Hamburg. The aim of the programme is to make the Hamburg photography scene visible in all its diversity for the local, but also the national and international audience and to create a temporary space for exchange and encounter with photography in and from Hamburg. Triennial Expanded will start with the Triennial Festival Weekend, which will take place from 02 to 06 June 2022.

The exhibition is open daily from 11.00 to 20.00.
