Mission Statement

The promotion of photography as a cultural asset is the central purpose of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation. Exhibitions, publications and projects are as much a part of its activities as scientific research work in the field of photography.

With the founding of the House of Photography in the Deichtorhallen in 2003 and the permanent loan of the F.C. Gundlach Collection "The Image of Man in Photography", ideal conditions were created for a constant examination of the holdings of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, which have been and continue to be made visible to the public not only in Hamburg, but all over the world in small and large exhibitions as well as accompanying publications.

The exhibitions The Heartbeat of Fashion (2006) and F.C. Gundlach. Das fotografische Werk (2008), each of which was accompanied by extensive book projects, presented the Foundation's collection and photographic life's work in up-to-date selections and were met with widespread interest and an extremely positive response from the press.

This positioning of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation and the cooperation between the Foundation and the House of Photography today offer an ideal constellation for the realisation of the purposes and goals of the Gundlach Foundation: the promotion of photography as a cultural asset in all its aspects, the processing and presentation of the Foundation's holdings as well as the scientific discussion of photographic issues.
