FLOTOFOTO. Photographs of Hamburg's Streets 1962-1972

FLOTOFOTO. Photographs of Hamburg's Streets 1962-1972 is the new illustrated book by Gisela Floto, featuring a text by Sebastian Lux.

In her early twenties, starting in 1962, photographer Gisela Floto spent several years on a tour of discovery through Hamburg with her Leica M3—a "free hunt," as she soon called her scouting expeditions. The images in this book follow the tracks of this hunt from the city center to its outskirts, always placing people at the heart of the frame. With their everyday humor, Floto’s photographs are an early example of what is now called street photography, and with their empathetic approach, they represent a pioneering achievement in female photography. There were no clear female role models for the young photographer at the time. All the more astonishing, then, is the sure instinct with which she developed a mature visual language during the few years in which her unique portrait of Hamburg was created.

Gisela Floto studied photography and spent several years working as a photojournalist in London and Paris. Since 1989, she has worked in editorial photography for Brigitte, ZEIT-Magazin, and Feinschmecker; she has directed exhibitions at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (MKG) Forum for Photography, served as a lecturer in photojournalism at the University of Hamburg, and held numerous exhibitions.
