Leisure activities are a topic that constantly occupies all of us. Simply do nothing for once? Impossible! Our lives have become more hectic and intense not just since the Corona pandemic. Everywhere we are confronted with increasingly exciting, adventurous, and exotic leisure activities. The pressure to keep up, and supposedly having to, is enormous. Leisure has transformed from a time of recuperation after work into a meticulously scheduled mass phenomenon. During peak times after work, on weekends, and public holidays, beaches, swimming pools, gyms, cinemas, and parks are bursting at the seams. Everyone strives for maximum relaxation, self-optimization, and the greatest possible distance from everyday life.
The exhibition A DAY OFF at the Stadtmuseum Hofheim am Taunus visualizes the manifestations of our leisure culture with a wink: people feast, fry, smoke, sweat, and exert themselves to the fullest. Some scenes are unthinkable today. Others are similar, as then, as now, people extensively sunbathed, watched the latest movie in the cinema, danced, or played bingo together. Through the lens of some of the world's most renowned photographers, we gain insight into the changing nature of our leisure behavior over the past hundred years.
