Andreas Herzau – Schtuky

ANDREAS HERZAU – SCHTUKY

We are pleased to present, in collaboration with the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg, a selection of photographs by Andreas Herzau, who sadly passed away far too soon last year. Klaus Elle will speak at the opening on August 28th at 6 pm.

From 1990 to 2023, Andreas Herzau photographically explored the world and interpreted it for himself and others. He became known to a wider audience through his comprehensive and extremely subjective portrait of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

This initial, incomplete selection offers a glimpse into the diverse work of this exceptional Hamburg-based photographer. On display are excerpts from seven photographic series: New York, Calcutta-Bombay, Moscow, Escape, Helvetica, Liberia, and AM. These works are complemented by individual images from other projects, including photographs from Novosibirsk and the Love Parade in Berlin.

Herzau was not only an attentive observer but also an interpreter of contemporary phenomena, which he addressed in often radically cropped photographs. Cultural studies scholar Professor Christoph Ribbat writes: "Herzau's images deal with... the nervousness that arises when the city suddenly loses its meaning. They document the urban close-quarters combat, the sudden, unavoidable confrontation,... as starkly as the garish colors that repeatedly interrupt the black-and-white cycle."

The exhibition runs from August 29th to October 19th and is curated by Sebastian Lux (Foundation F.C. Gundlach) and Peter Bialobrzeski (photographer).
