Four photographers offer very different perspectives on the Port of Hamburg, from using it as a backdrop for fashion photos to capturing striking panoramas. A photo exhibition by the F.C. Gundlach Foundation at the Fabrik der Künste (Factory of Arts).
F.C. Gundlach (1926–2021) photographed fashion in the heart of Hamburg's harbor around 1960—a truly avant-garde approach. His photographs of young fashion against a backdrop of rusty steel, tugboats, and ships are dynamically composed and possess a timeless aesthetic.
Hans Meyer-Veden (1931–2018) moved through Altona and the harbor district with great attention from the 1970s onward, capturing details with brilliant technique that would otherwise have escaped us as passersby. Many of his photographs also document the harbor, which today appears completely transformed.
Paolo Pellegrin (1964) examines this vast, entirely self-contained "district" and its striking graphic silhouette of technology and landscape. The photographs convey the city's economic power.
Peter Schulte (born 1965) has been collecting views and fragments of the city and the harbor for over 30 years. His photographs are documentary in their precision while simultaneously posing riddles for the viewer: reflections, glimpses through the frame, and steep perspectives convey small adventures that can be experienced and admired upon closer inspection.
The exhibition documents the transformation of the Port of Hamburg over a period of six decades.
