F.C. Gundlach – Film stars and fashion

Together with the Elmshorn Citizens' Foundation, the F.C. Gundlach Foundation invites you to the opening of the exhibition "Film Stars and Fashion" at the Elmshorn Art Association on September 17th at 6 pm. F.C. Gundlach's iconic images from the world of fashion and film will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Elmshorn Citizens' Foundation and the 25th anniversary of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.

Film and fashion are inextricably linked in F.C. Gundlach's work. Since 1949, he photographed not only fashion reports and features for illustrated magazines, but also star portraits and advertising images for radio programs and film distributors. Both spheres converge in the series "Film Stars in Fashion," which he created for the magazine "Film und Frau" (Film and Woman) starting in the early 1950s. He also produced portrait series of actors such as Romy Schneider and Cary Grant, which became iconic in his oeuvre and remain present in our visual memory to this day. But it's not only the models who come from the world of film—stylistic influences are unmistakable in many of his fashion photographs. Through natural poses, dynamic staging, and a narrative element, they often have a cinematic quality—not infrequently even reminiscent of stills from movies. The backdrop for these timeless, cinematic productions included not only metropolises like Paris and Berlin, but also Hamburg and its surrounding area, which are given special attention in the exhibition.

At the opening, guests will be welcomed by Sabine Junge, Chairwoman of the Art Association, and Bengta Reich, Chairwoman of the Board of the Elmshorn Citizens' Foundation. Following this, Prof. Dr. Michael Göring, literary scholar, author, long-time Chairman of the Board of the ZEIT-STIFTUNG BUCERIUS and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, will speak.
