In good shape – 75 years of the Basic Law

From October 4 to November 3, 2024, 36 photographers from the professional association FREELENS eV will present documentary and conceptual photographic perspectives on the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany at the "Jupiter" exhibition space. The exhibition, "In Good Shape – 75 Years of the Basic Law," is curated by Sebastian Lux, director of the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.

In good shape: The Basic Law

In 2024, the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany celebrated its 75th anniversary. Since 1949, its 146 articles have formed the basis of our democracy, regulating the fundamental rights and obligations that allow us to live together peacefully and in freedom. This anniversary provides photographers with an opportunity to explore the significance of our constitution for our daily lives through their work. " In Good Constitution" showcases the photographers' critical engagement with the Basic Law, essentially offering their own commentary on the law. With their individual portrait series, documentary photographs, staged scenes, and photographic art pieces, they explicitly aim to send a message against the anti-democratic tendencies in our country.

The FREELENS Hamburg regional group's project is accompanied by events and discussions on issues surrounding the German Basic Law. This multifaceted exhibition is the fourth in the series: following "We Give Hamburg Perspective" in 2021, "Hamburg Glimmers of Hope" in 2022, and "From the Water" in 2023, it once again explores the relationship between photography and the world we live in.
