The FLATZ Museum is showing works by Irving Penn from the F.C. Gundlach collection under the title "Black and White".
Flatz Museum Dornbirn
June 11 to September 10, 2022
American photographer Irving Penn (1917–2009) is considered one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. He rose to fame in the post-war period as a fashion and portrait photographer, later turning his attention increasingly to still life. Trained as a painter and designer, Penn photographed primarily for Vogue from the 1940s onward. His reduced and minimalist visual language and his effective, precise use of light made his photographs unmistakable.
The exhibition Irving Penn. Black and White is dedicated to the fascinating portraits of people by the master photographer, whose uniqueness stems from the virtuoso interplay of black and white, light and shadow. Among them is the moving series of photographs of the hand of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis and the famous portrait of the artistic genius Jean Cocteau.
An exhibition by the F.C. Gundlach Foundation in cooperation with the Flatz Museum Dornbirn. Curated by Sebastian Lux and Dr. Gerald A. Matt.
