Ephraim Palace Berlin
January 25 to March 10, 2019
To mark a donation, the special exhibition at the Ephraim-Palais Museum is dedicated to a prominent figure in the Berlin fashion scene. Uli Richter, from Potsdam, is one of Berlin's most important fashion designers. His modern, uncluttered style was a counterpoint to the opulent fashion of the post-war years – and an expression of a new self-image in Berlin.
Richter created wearable fashion from exquisite material combinations. With a ready-to-wear line, he was the first German designer to make his sophisticated designs accessible to a wider audience. Berlin's renewed international recognition as a fashion capital is largely thanks to him. His designs were appreciated by prominent clients such as Princess Grace of Monaco, Chancellor's wife Rut Brandt, and the actress and singer Hildegard Knef.
Uli Richter's private archive, featuring numerous vintage photographs and fashion drawings, documents his work in Berlin and around the world since the early 1950s. The Stadtmuseum Berlin expresses its gratitude for the generous donation of this archive with a special exhibition at the Ephraim-Palais Museum. Selected objects from the donation, along with about a dozen of his designs, showcase Uli Richter's work and thus highlight an important aspect of Berlin's fashion and urban history after 1945.
The exhibition features numerous works by F.C. Gundlach, from early black and white photographs to his later color work.
